If you are looking for a piece of furniture in which you can relax, you are looking for the LC4 Chaise Longue chair which was originally commissioned in 1928. This chair takes the shape of the natural curves of our bodies. The LC4 is indeed a masterpiece which is why it was included in as a permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. Each LC4 is manufactured in Italy by Cassina and is unique which is why each is numbered and signed.
Le Corbusier who was the designer of the LC4 was a spirited advocate of Modernism which was revealed in a series of chairs that he created that expressed his ideals and views with great sophistication. In 1928, he was required to design a chair which was to be used to furnish a villa in the Ville d’ Avray. His creation for the Ville d’ Avray was later exhibited at the Salon D’ Automne in 1929.
This chair is known as the relaxing machine as well as the floating chair due to the fact that it appears to float above its support. The headrest and pad of this relaxing machine is made of Italian leather while the back of cushion is made of fabric or leather. The pad is filled with low density foam while the base is made of a heave gauge oval section tube. The frame of the LC4 is made of stainless steel. (more...)
